Eel punk from Volendam band Lorem Ipsum and more pleasant tips

Every week, the Culture Club editors of NH Nieuws come up with three nightlife tips for the coming week: performances, events or other cultural events in the province that you should not miss. Tonight the Volendam band Lorem Ipsum presents their EP at Cinetol in Amsterdam, a large book fair at the unique location of the Koepel in Haarlem and Gluren bij de Buren also in our provincial capital.

Nightlife tip 1: Volendam band Lorem Ipsum in Amsterdam

We all know The Cats, BZN, Jan Smit and Nick and Simon. They are all old and new representatives of the Volendam eel doll. But now there is the punk pop of the young foursome Lorem Ipsum. The three driven musicians Peter, William, Tim and singer Michelle Tuijp, who has a hell of a voice. You could describe the music as punky pop music, but always with good melodies. And the latter is typically Volendam. Can we call it eel punk? “That’s great. We hadn’t thought of it ourselves yet”, the band members laugh.

Lorem Ipsum makes songs that are also about something. Ordinary is about the fact that it is very difficult in Volendam to be an alternative as a young person. “The monoculture of the village forces you to do ordinary, ordinary, otherwise you will be left out,” says Michelle. And the song Sanguli, from the new EP Bitter Garnish, about the annual trip from half of Volendam to camping Sanguli in Salou, Spain. “They save for it all year round and then they all go to that campsite and it’s little Volendam there. I used to go often,” says guitarist Peter Steur.

Although they write critical songs about Volendam culture, they do not oppose Volendam. “Last year there was a competition on 3FM where the prize was that you could play for this channel. Then half of Volendam voted for us and we won the prize.” Will we ever see the band appear in Volendam costume on a record cover? “I don’t think we’ll go that far, but never say never,” laughs Peter.

Tonight, February 2, 2023, Lorem Ipsum presents the new EP Bitter Garnish at Cinetol in Amsterdam. On February 9, the band will play in the Pilaren in Alkmaar and on March 11, the band will play a home match in Cultuurhuis PX in Volendam.

Nightlife tip 2: Book Fair in the Dome in Haarlem

The Dome in Haarlem was first a prison, then a reception center for asylum seekers and now a place for cultural events. This weekend, the beautiful national monument will be the stage for an exclusive book market. Twenty-five specialized antiquarian bookshops present a large selection of rare and special, old and new antiquarian books of good quality. The range varies from children’s books to poetry, from literature to comics, from books about sports to history, art, photography, typography or topography. There is also a stand where old school posters and maps can be admired. For lovers of exclusive second-hand books, there is certainly something special to be found on this market. And as a visitor you should not forget to look up so that you can also admire the Dome. Entrance is free.

Book market in De Koepel in Haarlem on Sunday, February 5 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Nightlife tip 3: Peeking at the neighbors in Haarlem

For tip 3 we stay in the provincial capital. The living room festival Gluren bij de Buren will also be organized there on Sunday 5 February.

The amateur arts festival lowers thresholds for encounters in the neighborhood and offers a stage for local acts. After two years without a winter edition, Gluren bij de Buren returns in 2023 to the intimacy of living rooms filled with coffee fumes. Each act gives three performances of half an hour, freely accessible to the public. This way, neighbors and other enthusiasts can put together their own route through the city and hop from performance to performance.

Performing artists of all kinds are encouraged to take the rug stage: from rappers to jazz bands, magicians to storytellers and ballet dancers to spoken word performers. The size of the living room does not matter. Both detached farms and cozy student rooms can be registered to be transformed into one-day stages for local performers during Gluren bij de Buren.

Peeping at the Neighbors throughout Haarlem will take place February 5, 2023 from noon to 5 p.m.
