“Dune” wins five Baftas – “The Power Of The Dog” is Best Picture

British Film Awards

Sci-fi epic Dune has won five awards at the British Film Awards, known as Baftas, held in London on Sunday.

However, director Denis Villeneuve’s film came up empty handed in the most important categories. Best Picture was Jane Campion’s Netflix production The Power Of The Dog. The filmmaker was also awarded Best Director for this, but was not there herself. Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” won the award for Outstanding British Film.

Two weeks before the Oscars in Los Angeles, Will Smith won Best Actor for King Richard. However, the US actor was also absent from the ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall. British actress Joanna Scanlan was delighted to receive the award for Best Actress. Supporting Baftas went to Ariana Debose (“West Side Story”) and deaf actor Troy Kotsur (“Coda”).

“Dune”, which was nominated in eleven categories and thus the most, received Baftas for camera, editing and sound. The film music by the German composer Hans Zimmer, who is currently on a concert tour in Germany, also received an award. The Bafta trophy for the visual effects in Dune went to an international team that includes German special effects artist Gerd Nefzer.
