DTB talent Eva Lys sets another exclamation mark

The German tennis talent Eva Lys has taken another big step on her way into the top 100 of the WTA. At the tournament in Seoul, the 21-year-old mastered her opening hurdle surprisingly confidently and thus set the next exclamation mark on the tour.

Lys (number 119 in the world rankings) defeated the Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (number 59 in the world rankings) 6:2 and 6:4.

Lys celebrated another success against a significantly better placed player, after they had recently defeated several players from the top 100 in the world with Mayar Sherif from Egypt, the Canadian US Open finalist from 2021 Leylah Fernandez, and Christina Bucsa from Spain could.

Speaking of the top 100: In order to achieve the goal of a place among them, Lys still has to clear one or two hurdles in Seoul. The reason for this is their great success at the same time last year. At that time she was in the semi-finals of the prominent ITF tournament in Trnava and won in the same place a little later. By the way, the native Ukrainian defeated Schmiedlova in the final.

The points scored back then will no longer be there this year, although another win in Seoul should make up for this.

Lys, who made headlines for the first time in 2021 by winning the German Tennis Championships, will now face number four seeded Czech Marie Bouzkova in South Korea. There are no other German players at the start.

Lys is also part of the quintet that will represent the DTB colors at the Billie Jean King Cup from November 7th to 12th. The German selection will face France and Italy in the group phase of the successor tournament to the Fed Cup, but is by no means considered the favorite. Team boss Rainer Schüttler also emphasized this. However, Lys has proven that she is definitely good for a surprise.
