Drunk driver arrested in Veenoord after pursuit

The police arrested a 22-year-old man in Veenoord after a chase last night. The man from the municipality of Hof van Twente showed “very dangerous driving”, according to the police.

Halfway through the evening, officers received a report that someone was driving swaying on the N34 near Holsloot. Police suspected the driver was under the influence and stopped him. The man ignored that and ran off.

The car finally stopped at the Boerdijk near Veenoord. The man from Twente resisted his arrest and took off again in his car. “This created an unsafe situation, in which the officers could only just avoid being hit.”

The man was arrested later that evening. Officers had to smash a window of the car to get him under control.

A breathalyzer was taken at the police station. It turned out that the man had drunk too much. It is not clear how much alcohol he had in his blood. The man is also suspected of attempted aggravated assault, ignoring a stop sign and dangerous driving.

The 22-year-old driver is still in custody and is being questioned.
