The ideal drummer Hansi (actually: Hans-Joachim) Behrendt is dead. He died on Monday at the age of 68 in Berlin, as his widow made public. A cause of death was not initially known.

With his band Ideal he belonged to the spearhead of the Neue Deutsche Welle, which was style-defining in the 80s. The band around founder Annette Humpe delivered numerous hits of this time, including “Blaue Augen” and “Berlin”.

However, Ideal had a very short half-life on the pop scene. After founding in 1980, it was already over in 1983. Before Ideal, Behrendt also played together with Volker Kriegels in the Mild Maniac Orchestra. During his work for the Neonbabies he made the acquaintance of Humpe.

Hansi Behrendt had a “crazy groove”

After Ideal, Berendt mainly played in the background and took on many projects. He later decided to turn his back on the music business and become a building contractor.

Annette Humpe was one of the first to react to the death notice. She testified to the radio station “Radioeins” that “Hansi Behrendt was an excellent drummer” and emphasized that he used his equipment with a “crazy groove” like no other musician of that time.
