Developed by MIT with the University of Bari, Vista uses artificial vision to analyze accidents from above, locate missing people and support rescuers. The objective is to reduce intervention times
Robotics and artificial intelligence at the service of road emergencies. Is called View (Vehicle Intelligent System for Traffic Automation), a visual assistance system via drone for roadside assistancedeveloped by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) with the collaboration of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Bari Aldo Moro. A “special” drone, capable of analyzing the area of an accident with artificial intelligence and reconstructing a picture of the event in just a few minutes for the benefit of rescuers.
THE SYSTEM

It was presented in Bari, in Lama San Giorgi, in the presence of the councilor for Infrastructure and Mobility of the Puglia Region, Raffaele Piemontese, and representatives of the MIT. The life-saving drone is one of the first projects in the world that integrates artificial intelligence and roadside medical assistance. Vista uses artificial vision systems (computer vision) to independently scan the area where the road accident occurred. You can wear it in search of any missing personsidentify people who have been thrown far away by the impact, off the road or onto slopes, and thus represent a 360° operational support for rescuers. The bird’s-eye perspective is particularly useful in the crucial stages following an incident. «We can save lives reducing intervention times in the so-calledgolden hour‘, the decisive hour to reach people involved in accidents in isolated areas or that ended up in an embankment”, said the Piedmontese councilor at the presentation, highlighting the added value of Vista.
EXPERIMENTATION

In the field testing phase, which concluded positively, a motorcycle accident. While it flew over the area sending the images to the operational centers, Vista’s “electronic brain”, thanks to artificial intelligence, identified the vehicles involved, detected the presence of people so as to report any emergencies that require immediate intervention. “It is a project born and developed in Puglia which can become an extended operational experiment on a regional basis applied on high risk roads or used in summer peaks“, concluded Piemontese speaking about the prospects.
