Motorsport federation FIA reported well after the race after the usual inspections that the plank under both cars had worn off too much. “The measured thickness was less than nine millimeters on both cars,” the FIA said.
The incident was referred to the stewards, but that was no more than a formality. A technical violation always leads to a disqualification, as was confirmed shortly afterwards. For example, it also happened to Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) in China earlier this year due to the same incident.
Norris finished second in Las Vegas, behind winner Max Verstappen. The Briton now loses the eighteen points for that second place. Verstappen’s deficit in the World Cup standings is now suddenly 24 points. He is tied with number two Piastri, who initially finished fourth and now misses out on twelve points.
