The sharks wash up between Sint-Idesbald and Ster der Zee. The municipality does not rule out that more dead sharks may wash ashore. At low tide the beach is checked again.
The spotted smooth shark occurs in our North Sea, but the population has been under pressure for some time. ILVO is investigating how the species can be better protected, including by preventing sharks from ending up in fishing nets.
