Double feeling for Young AZ talent Kees Smit after special week: “Boy’s dream”

A special week for Kees Smit. The just seventeen-year-old midfielder made his debut on Monday in the home game against Helmond Sport (1-1) in professional football and on Friday evening he was allowed to follow up in Breda. Unfortunately, Smit lost 5-1 to NAC with Young AZ. “Making my debut is a boyhood dream for me.”

“It’s nice to make minutes, only losing 5-1 is not good,” says Kees Smit afterwards in front of the NH Sport camera. The midfielder came in ten minutes before time. “Playing football in the NAC stadium is quite different with so many supporters. I thought it was a nice experience.”

During the winter break, Smit was also allowed to go to Spain with AZ on a training camp. In the coastal town of Valencia, he trained daily under the watchful eye of head coach Pascal Jansen. The Alkmaar club has a lot of confidence in the great talent, who is fixed until the summer of 2024. And Maarten Martens also sees that potential. The Belgian who has final responsibility for Young AZ had Smit come in twice last week. “He shows weekly at AZ under 18 that he is an added value and he works hard. Then we want to give him the challenge at a higher level.”

The Foresters

At the age of nine, Smit made the step from amateur club De Foresters from Heiloo to the youth academy of AZ. After that he came out for all youth teams and now he can taste professional football for the first time this week. “My goal is to get to AZ 1 as soon as possible. This may be too fast this season, but hopefully next season.”

Young AZ remains number seven in the first division despite the 5-1 defeat in Breda. Next Friday, the Martens team will receive VVV Venlo in Wijdewormer. With the Limburgers, many former AZ players play with Soulyman Allouch, Robin Lathouwers, Sem Dirks and Richard Sedlácek.
