Shortly before the start of the World Cup in Tokyo, the independent integrity commission of the World Athletics Association (AIU) lodged an appointment against an acquittal by the Ethiopian medium-range runner Diribe Welteji at the International Sports Court CAS.
The background is a procedure from the national anti-doping authority that Welteji had acquitted on August 27 from a possible violation of refusing or omitting a doping test.
Athletics: Can Welteji start at the World Cup?
The independent integrity commission had appealed on Monday and also requested that the Worldeji to be temporarily blocked until the final decision.
The 23-year-old is registered for the 1,500 meters at the Athletics World Cup in Tokyo. The preliminaries take place at the start on Saturday (12:50 p.m. German time). A decision by the CAS about the requested preliminary lock is expected before the title fights started.
Welteji won over the 1,500 meters of silver at the last World Cup in Budapest two years ago. At the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, the Ethiopian became fourth over the same distance. In Tokyo, she is again a medal candidate as the third in the world year’s best list – if she can start.
