Don’t be scared: that’s why helicopters are flying over Zoetermeer

Don’t be shocked if you see and hear army helicopters flying over Zoetermeer in the coming days. The Air Force is conducting a large-scale exercise called Falcon Autumn. They also fly in the airspace around our city.

The Ministry of Defense uses various locations in the Netherlands for this exercise. Also non-military, such as a heath or forest area. This makes it as realistic as possible for the military, according to the Ministry of Defense.

flight program

The flight program started on October 31 and will last until November 18. During that period, the helicopters are allowed to fly low in two areas: East Netherlands (from Friesland and Groningen to Limburg) and Valkenburg (South Holland). Then the helicopters can fly over at a low altitude, which can cause extra noise nuisance. The helicopters do not fly over Zoetermeer every day. The helicopters are active around Zoetermeer on this date:

  • Wednesday, November 16, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Falcon Autumn

Not only the Dutch participate in the exercise. The participating soldiers are from 11 Airmobile Brigade, the Defense Helicopter Command, the US Army Europe and the Polish Armed Forces. Defense: “A total of 37 helicopters and more than a thousand soldiers are taking part. Defense supplies Apache attack helicopters, Cougar transport helicopters and Chinook transport helicopters. The Americans are coming with Black Hawks, among other things, while the Poles have flown over their MI-8 and MI-17 transport helicopters.”
