Dogs get their own piece of city beach in Hoorn, with a duty to clean up

Good news for all dogs who love the beach: the Hoornse city beach will have an adjacent separate swimming beach for four-legged friends. They have to wait a little longer: the dog beach will only open in the summer of 2024.

“Because there is a need for a place where dogs can run loose, we have designated an off-leash area for dogs with a duty to clean up immediately adjacent to the city beach,” the council of Hoorn writes in a council letter. Dogs are also allowed in the water at this spot, just south of the breakwater at the beach pavilion.

Because dogs are not allowed in sports and play areas and the city beach itself. This is to prevent the beach and swimming water from becoming polluted with dog faeces. It is also a risk to bathing water quality. Dogs are allowed to roam on a leash on the walking and cycling paths of the city beach.

The desire for a separate dog beach has been there for some time. Residents pitched a few years ago their ideas via the platform ‘For a Beautiful City’.
