Dog Teddy fleeing from fireworks spotted on A9, police search in vain with helicopter

The police searched for a dog on the A9 this morning with a helicopter and several cars. It concerns Teddy, who ran away from Amsterdam-Zuidoost on January 2 after being shocked by loud fireworks explosions. The animal was spotted on the highway by both owner Peggy and the police, but despite the search, the dog has not yet been found.

It has now been seven days since Teddy ran away from the Gaasperplas. Peggy has been searching ever since, including today. When she was driving on the A9, near the Holendrecht interchange, she suddenly saw her dog sitting on the side of the road, she says. AT5. “We then turned around to go to him and when we got there I got out. I then made myself small, as prescribed by protocol, and went very carefully to him.”

But the dreamed-of reunion with her pet did not come to Peggy in the end. “He was very scared, his instincts took over and he ran away from me. So he didn’t even recognize me.” Around the same time, the police also spotted the dog. This time not on the verge, but on the highway. Several police cars and a helicopter were then deployed to find the beast, but they were ultimately unsuccessful.

Peggy asks people who see her dog not to approach it themselves. “We don’t want too many people to go looking for him and certainly not shout. If you’ve seen him, report it on one of the numbers on the flyer, but please don’t go to him.”

Dogs and fireworks

So Teddy ran away because he was scared by loud fireworks. Marianne Dalhuisen of Dogsearch Netherlands already told us on Thursday AT5 that it is a known issue. She called New Year’s Eve “a disaster”. In total, around the turn of the year, the organization received about 14 reports of lost dogs, mainly in the Randstad. Except for Teddy, all lost dogs have now been found.

According to Dalhuisen, dogs’ fear of the banging cannot be solved: “It is such a shock for those animals”. The organization would like to see that fireworks may only be set off at fireworks shows by the municipality. Dog owners can then avoid these places. In addition, Dalhuisen advises dog owners to keep their dog on a leash from the end of November and to pay extra attention. “Certainly from mid-December to mid-January. Also in the woods and quiet hiking areas, it’s just unpredictable.”
