Dog dumped in container now lives with garbage man: ‘We are super happy’

The dog that was rescued from a dumpster in Den Bosch has a new home. The garbage man who found the dog has adopted Boris, as the animal is now called. “He is doing great. And my children are overjoyed that we finally have a dog,” says Boy de Wilde.

Boy couldn’t believe his eyes when he threw the bags from an underground dumpster into his truck in early April. He suddenly saw a dog appear among the garbage. In great panic, the animal jumped off the meter-high truck and landed lifeless on the ground. “I thought: he is going to die”, Boy said then.

But in the animal shelter in Den Bosch, the dog quickly recovered. He was given the name Boris and has now fully recovered. Due to the police investigation, he had to stay in the shelter for a while, but since Tuesday Boy and his wife are officially the new owners.

Their two sons aged 10 and 8. They jumped for joy when they heard they were getting a dog, says Boy. “We have always had dogs in the past, but we didn’t have time for that with young children. Now they are at an age where they can walk him themselves. So this comes at just the right time.”

“He is happy and we are super happy with him.”

With the whole family they went to pick up Boris at the animal shelter. “He didn’t know what he was going through with that dog,” says Boy. “He has always had very little attention, but now there were suddenly a lot of people around him. He was jumping and barking all the time.”

The dog had undergone a major metamorphosis. “You don’t recognize him anymore,” says Boy. “When he went to the shelter he was traumatized and really thin. Now he is a bit thicker and he is doing a great job.”

But according to the garbage man, Boris quickly got used to his new place. “He wasn’t scared at all and thinks it’s fine. It really is a sweet, funny animal.” He listens carefully to his name, sits on command and listens when he needs to take his place, according to Boy. “He is very cheerful and we are super happy with him.”

“I would have liked to know why it turned out the way it did.”

The animal police are still investigating how the dog ended up in the container. Boy would like to know who the original owner was. “I’d like to know why it turned out the way it did,” he says. “I did everything I could. Now it’s up to others to show that they are good tracker dogs,” he laughs.

During his daily round on the truck, Boy sometimes thinks about the day he found the four-legged friend. “I’ll keep doing my thing, that hasn’t changed. But something very nice has come out for us,” Boy concludes.
