If you buy a pet, you should think about what costs will pay beforehand. These expenses should be calculated for the pet.

Around 40 million Germans have a pet – that is, about half of the population shares their lives with an animal friend. In addition to the prospect of a great time, including extensive walks with the fur nose or a play hour with the cat, future pet owners should also be clear about what to expect with the possession of a pet: for years of responsibility and sometimes not insignificant costs – which, of course, are happy to accept in most cases.

The cat – Germany’s most popular pet

Cats are more popular in Germany, and one or more velvet paws lived in around 26 percent of German households in 2020. Since cats are not loners, a new owner should basically consider whether he is not getting a second cat. The house tigers are not necessarily expensive to buy as long as no pedigree cats are desired. The German Animal Welfare Association estimates costs of 100 to 2,000 euros, depending on whether the animal is fetched by the shelter or breeder. Based on the animal welfare association, basic costs such as cat litter, toys, the bowl or a basket amount to 150 to 500 euros. In addition, there are costs incurred annually such as feed, vaccinations and deworms – the animal welfare association assumes 700 euros here. Depending on the individual circumstances, operations or castrations come on top. Over the entire period of a cat life of 16 years, the posture costs of a cat would amount to 11,450 euros on average according to the calculations of the animal welfare association. However, cats are not the most expensive in their attitude.

The loyal four -legged friend – so much expenditure should be calculated for a dog

Dogs are also very popular among Germans: According to the IVH, 10.7 million fur noses lived in 21 percent of all German households. In dogs, the acquisition and posture costs can vary greatly depending on the breed and size, which is why the animal welfare association specifies wide price range. Accordingly, a dog can cost up to several thousand euros when purchasing 200 euros – the 200 euros would be the protective fee of the shelter. The first costs for the basic equipment such as bowl, leash, basket, feces bags and toys can be between 60 and 300 euros. In addition, the annual costs for feed, deworms, dog tax, dog liability insurance and vaccinations add up to 750 to 1,200 euros. The individual extra costs for high veterinary bills or other expenses must also be considered. Overall, the animal welfare association for a 14-year-old dog is based on a total of 12,000 to 17,000 euros.

Small animals – rodents also need a lot

Rabbits, guinea pigs and rabbits are also very popular in the German population. The small rodents are particularly in demand as pets for children, and they are also cheaper and less complex than dogs in the keeping. According to the animal welfare association, guinea pigs and rabbits cost an average of 25 euros when buying. However, since you should not live alone, the purchase of two small animals is always recommended, so that the costs ultimately amount to around 50 euros. The basic equipment of cage, drinking falsche, single litter, food bowl and interior adds up to 100 to 300 euros. Every year owners have to expect posture costs of around 690 euros. There are also individual additional costs. For ten years, the costs for two rodents are at least 7,000 euros.

Hamsters, on the other hand, are even more gentle for the wallet. The Sparkasse calculates ten euros for the small rodents when buying in the pet shop – and since hamsters are loners, they should also be kept individually. Every month, around 18 euros for feed, litter and toys are incurred for the dwarf, for a hamster with a life expectancy of three years, an owner has to pay around 800 euros.

The canaries – with so much costs for birds must be expected

Those who choose birds as pets are also faced with less high posture costs. Web.de writes that a budgie or canary costs around 2,000 euros at the age of twelve. Markt.de proposes around 130 euros for the basic equipment with cage and toys, the feed costs five to 15 euros per month. According to Mark.de, the veterinary costs are between 20 and 50 euros per visit, unless it is an emergency.
