Dog and rain claim leading role in Giro: Remco Evenepoel, Primoz Roglic crashes, Kaden Groves sprints to victory | Giro

Australian cyclist Kaden Groves has won the fifth stage of the Tour of Italy. The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider was the fastest in the final sprint of a heavily thinned peloton in the wet streets of Salerno.

A crash just before the finish marred the final phase of the rainy stage. World champion Remco Evenepoel, the towering favorite for the overall victory, was one of the victims. The Belgian was able to finish the stage and will lose no time, as the crash happened within 3 kilometers of the finish. Earlier in the stage, the Belgian fell for the first time, when the crash was caused by a crossing dog.

In the last meters Mark Cavendish also crashed in full sprint. The Brit skidded on the wet road surface and, sliding his bike, crossed the finish line in fifth place. The Italian Jonathan Milan finished second, the Dane Mads Pedersen was third.

Primoz Roglic, another favorite for the overall victory, also crashed in the last ten kilometers. This was due to the combination of slippery roads and high speed. He got on the bike quickly and didn’t seem to have any problems.
