At Borussia Mönchengladbach, Stefan Lainer only gets a little time in the current season. Does the right-back take the Gladbach escape in summer?

As “Sky” reports, Stefan Lainer and Borussia Mönchengladbach could go separate paths after the season. A change of the Austrian in summer is quite possible.

However, there are two prerequisites for this: on the one hand, the transfer must be correct, and on the other hand Lainer wants to strive for a departure.

The 32-year-old is contractually bound to Gladbach until 2026.

He recently emphasized that Lainer is dissatisfied with his season this season.

“I am in top shape, but I can hardly use Borussia Mönchengladbach. Of course I am dissatisfied with the role as a baking-up. I want to play again and not sit on the bench for another six months,” he explained in conversation with the “Salzburger Nachrichten” at the end of January.

Gladbach sports director Roland Virkus reacted with honest words. “It is clear that a player who does not play and always has the claim is dissatisfied if he doesn’t play. We all know Stevie, he is an ambitious player, an experienced player. But he also has to face the competition,” he said to the “Bild”.

Does Lainer draw back to Austria?

In the 2024/25 season, Lainer has 17 missions for the foals. In the starting eleven, however, the veteran was only four times.

The “Salzburger Nachrichten” recently associated Lainer with RB Salzburg and Sturm Graz. “Salzburg is my home, which is always interesting. First of all, I want to play again, no matter where,” emphasized the defender with a view of his youth club.

Lainer changed from RB Salzburg to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2019 for 12.5 million euros. Since then he has played 158 games for the traditional club.
