The German athletes around the Kohlschraft Olympic champion Yemisi Ogunleye have at least a little closer to the podium at the European Team Championship.
The selection of the German Athletics Association (DLV) won a victory and three other podium places on the second day in Madrid and is seventh with 120 points.
The Netherlands is clearly in the lead with 165.5 points ahead of host Spain (134 points) and Italy (133 points). After the opening day with the two pole vault competitions, the German team still took the 16th and thus last rank.
Karl Bebendorf made the 3,000 meter obstacle for the first and only German victory at the European Championship, which even set up a championship record in 8: 20.43 minutes.
Three times second in the throwing disciplines
In her discipline with solid 19.58 meters behind the world year’s best Jessica Schilder (20.14 meters), Ogunleye from the Netherlands became second.
Hammer thrower Merlin Hummel also proved to be a point arrangement. The 23-year-old hurled his throwing device on a personal best of 81.27 meters and only had to give up the Ukrainian Mychajlo Kochhan (81.66 meters). Discus thrower Shanice Craft also finished second with 61.53 meters behind the Dutchman Jorinde van Klinken (64.61 meters).
The eleventh edition of the Team European Championship will increase until Sunday. The best 16 nations take part and each send an athlete, an athlete or a season into the 37 competitions. The better the placement, the more points there are for the team. Germany took third place at the team European Championships two years ago in Chorzów in Poland. The podium is aiming to select the DLV selection this time.
