With 24 Grand Slam titles won, Novak Djokovic is the record major winner in the history of tennis. Alexander Zverev, on the other hand, only recently fulfilled his dream of his first Grand Slam triumph in the 41st attempt. After Zverev’s final success at the French Open 2026, the legend from Serbia now addressed the DTB number one with emotional words.
“Sasha, I have known you since you were ten years old. You fought with my youngest brother on the training courts, while I competed against your older brother Mischa on the big stage in both the junior and pro rooms. I have maintained a respectful and friendly relationship with your entire family for many years. We had countless conversations about tennis tactics, strategic games, life, family, business. We had fun on and off the court,” the 39-year-old opened his statement on social media.
In Djokovic’s own words, the fact that Zverev was able to win the biggest titles despite his diabetes is what earns him the most respect. But Djokovic was also impressed by the success in Roland Garros, where Zverev had to bear an enormous psychological burden after top favorite Jannik Sinner’s early exit.
“I’m glad you did it”
“Overcoming the mental hurdle and shutting down critics who thought you would never win a major makes this Grand Slam victory even more special and unforgettable,” Djokovic said.
And further: “Seeing the tears of joy you had with your parents, your brother and other team members made me emotional. I’m glad you made it – and you absolutely deserve this success because you worked so hard on every front to achieve it. Enjoy it!” said the veteran.

Djokovic himself had to withdraw in the third round in Paris in 2026.
