“Why country?” says Marjan. “You know, a song in the country tells a story and I think we both really like that.” According to the ladies, there is more of a message in country music than in some popular top 40 songs. According to them, the story is often in a more prominent place than with certain other musical movements. “What I sometimes hear from people is that the music is very simple. Sometimes only with a few chords”, Lysanne adds. With those few chords and simple melodies, the country artists still manage to tell a whole story. “I think that’s really nice about it.”
In addition to a number of well-known country covers that the ladies perform with conviction, they are also working hard on their own music. One of the songs that Just Us played during the Neo Sessions is called Little House On The Prairie. Self written. “It actually came from Marjan’s mother,” says Lysanne. It is an ode to the TV series of the same name, which tells the story of a family that has to fend for itself in a small yard in the middle of the vast plains of the United States. By helping each other they make it and that is exactly what happens less at the moment. “Nowadays that is something, at least what I notice, what I miss a bit,” explains Lysanne. Back to days gone by, without social media, phones or computers.
