Disaster year 2023 could not have ended better for Donar

The disastrous year of 2023 could not have ended better for Donar. The Groningen basketball players won against Basketball Academy Limburg (59-64), while the competition dropped points.

Due to the bankruptcy, last season will always remain a black page in Donar’s club history. Yet the club is slowly but surely focusing again. The Elite Gold, in which the best clubs from the Netherlands and Belgium will compete against each other in a few months, beckons after last weekend’s favorable results.

More exciting than good

After the sensitive 70-73 home defeat against Basketball Academy Limburg, Donar had to win by at least 4 points in Weert to turn the mutual result, which could be decisive in the end, in Groningen’s favor. It worked. Partly thanks to a series of three-pointers from Sander Hollanders, Donar took a big lead in Limburg in the first half: 32-39. The third and fourth quarters were more exciting than good, but the northerners still managed to win (59-64). John Meeks was top scorer with 17 points.

Feyenoord surprisingly lost

Because Den Helder Suns surprisingly won against Feyenoord in North Holland, Donar significantly strengthened the fourth place, which at the end provides a ticket to the Elite Gold. At the beginning of 2024, the people of Groningen will fight with Limburg and Feyenoord to see who will definitively qualify for the competition of Dutch and Belgian top teams.
