The German speed skating team draws a mixed balance after the World Cup in Hamar. The Germans were not in top shape at the highlight of the season.

The German speed skiers have been lagging behind the world tip for a long time. A positive trend can be seen in the width, but it was not enough for medals at the ice skating world championship in Hamar in Norweg.

The German team had traveled to the title fights with a significantly larger contingent than in previous years. “Under my guided tour we have never had so many starters at the World Cup”Nadine Seidenglanz, the director of the German ice skate and Shorttrack community, was pleased in the Sportschau interview. Despite the numerous starts, the DEG athletes were searched in vain in the top 3.

Women’s trio briefly missed the World Cup medal in persecution

In the result lists, the Germans were usually found somewhere between tenth and 20th place. “Next year we want to go a step towards it”Seidenglanz. According to the sports director, the appearance of the German women’s trio was encouraging. Lea Sophie Scholz, Josephine Schlörb and Josie Hofmann have only passed the first World Cup medal for five years. In the end, only 0.53 seconds were missing on the third -placed team Canada. “In the persecution we were closest to the medal”Seidenglanz.

However, the performance encourages the 2026 Olympic Games. Schlörb, Schulz and Hofmann train regularly and increase from year to year. Schlörb moved to Berlin from Dresden for the dream of an Olympic medal – especially to benefit from the training facilities. Josie Hofmann was also able to convince in singles. Over the 5,000 meters, she took a good eighth place.

Josie Hofmann was a bright spot at the World Cup.

Felix Maly for the first time in the top ten

It was also positive that Felix Maly was still on his best result on the last day of the World Cup: the 30-year-old became tenth and made it into the top 10 on the “long strap” for the first time.

The best 1,500-meter result won Hendrik Dombek, who became eleventh. In the end, minimum two tenths of a second were missing in eighth place, but just two tenths of a second with consequences: “In the end, the difference is the squad structure within the DOSB. As a eighth you get an Olympic squad and of course also has the potential to run in at the Olympic Games next year”according to the 27-year-old, who added to Milan: “I think I still have the potential and we as a team too.”

The second best German over 1,500 meters became Stefan Emele as 13th, Moritz Klein came 17th as the third German starter.

Moritz Klein fails over 1,000 meters

The results are primarily concerned because the German athletes were far from their top form at the highlight of the season. So Moritz Klein ran over his parade route – 1,000 meters – over the important eighth place. The Erfurt was simply too slow. With Joep Wennemars, an athlete world champion that Klein has often beaten in the World Cup has often been. “It also comes because you see: it works. But it also motivates that it is possible and that you can do it yourself“, said the athlete with a view of Milan.

Sports director silk gloss also remains positive: “We have made a clear progress, we were able to get closer to the top and have to close the last gap.” Next year Finn Sonnkalb will also be added – the 17 -year -old is considered the greatest hope in the German youth area and is supposed to bring a breath of fresh air to the team.
