New details emerge on the accident that cost the life of the Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, also a footballer. They were aboard a rental Lamborghini that caught fire after the road exit due to the outbreak of a tire, while traveling at high speed on the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla (Zamora). The two brothers were reaching Santander and had chosen the car instead of the plane on medical advice. Already in the past Diogo Jota had chosen this itinerary to return to England.
the intervention

Diogo Jota had been recently operated for a lung lesion and the recommended protocol advise against flying to avoid the risks related to variations in blood pressure. Diogo’s wife Jota confirmed that the two would sleep in Benavente, an hour and a half of the road from the accident site and then reach Santander and take the ferry of the 16 to Portsmouth (England). There they would have traveled another 430 km to get to Liverpool: the Reds striker should have started the preparation with his teammates on Tuesday.

Sources of the Guardia Civil indicated the possible excessive speed as the cause of the accident. According to the unofficial reconstruction of the Civil Guard, during a phase of overtaking – on a motorway section with a limit of 120 km per hour – on the irregular asphalt a rear tire broke out, causing the loss of control of the vehicle, the impact and therefore the explosion. The car, a rear -wheel drive Lamborghini Huracán, had been hired by Diogo Jota.
the complaints
–
The accident occurred on the A-52, the motorway between Galicia and Portugal, already in the past under accusation for poor maintenance. In April of last year, numerous complaints had been submitted for the bad state of the asphalt and 10 days ago a woman was seriously injured and was extracted from her car destroyed in the same area of Diogo Jota’s accident. The police are also trying to determine at what speed the Lamborghini of the two brothers traveled.
Diogo’s wife Jota, Rute Cardoso, yesterday reached the Institute of Forensic Anatomy of Zamora where the two bodies were brought for recognition through DNA. Only 12 days ago the wedding was celebrated in the presence of the three children. Psychological assistance has been ensured for her and families.
This afternoon in the chapel of the resurrection in Gondomar there is a funeral vigil. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 10 to the Matrix Church of Gondomar, a few kilometers from Porto, where the two brothers were born and raised.
