The passages in the dike at Delfzijl will be closed on Sunday evening at 11:30 p.m. because high water is expected at sea. From that moment on, the port of Delfzijl will be closed and traffic will have to detour, reports Waterschap Noorderzijlvest.

The dike passages (coupures) are interruptions in the dike that are normally open to traffic. When a water level of 3.00 meters above NAP or higher is expected at sea, they are closed to prevent water from entering the city center of Delfzijl. Rijkswaterstaat expects that limit to be reached around 2:30 am.

The dike passages open again when the water has subsided and water no longer flows over the road.
