The tragic news arrived on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday: “Vito di Tano flew to heaven”. For 18 years he had had to deal with sclerodermia, an autoimmune disease with which he had learned to live together, but now he was fighting against a malignant lung tumor, which had been diagnosed on him on August 28th. He was born in Monopoli on September 23, 1954 and had become an institution in Italian cyclocross: as a young man he moved to the North for work reasons, naturally bringing his bikes with him. He ran on the road, mainly, but had started working and therefore he no longer had a long time to train, so he had decided to move on to the cross, a specialty in which he had won all the races in Puglia. A lucky decision. In 1979 he made his debut at the Saccolongo World Cup, winning among the amateurs. The following year he won the first of his 6 national titles, while at the World Cup he ended up almost always among the first 10. Until 1986, when in Lembeek (Belgium) he centrified the ironed bis still among the amateurs. His career was linked to Paolo Guerciotti, the manager of the historic cross guerciotti team, who in the night was unable to sleep after learning the tragic news. The funeral of Vito di Tano have been set for tomorrow at 10.
