Should FC Barcelona commit a new goalkeeper, Dietmar Hamann has no way around the departure of Marc-André Ter Stegen. Spanish media write what it is about.
Marc-André Ter Stegen is still under contract with FC Barcelona until 2028. But when it comes to ex-international Dietmar Hamann, the German goalkeeper should seriously think about saying goodbye-also with a view to the World Cup next year.
In his column for the pay TV station Sky, Hamann wrote that Ter Stegen in the Nations League “kept out” in the game for third place against France. But if he wanted to be clear number one at the World Cup in twelve months, he would have to look for a new club. Should Barça Joan Garcia from City Rivals Espanyol commit – which is imminent, according to matching Spanish media reports – there is probably no other choice. Hamann is certain: “Then there is no way around a farewell.”
The 33-year-old switched from Borussia Mönchengladbach to Barça in 2014 and later even became captain there. A serious knee injury had long put him out of action last season. He returned at the end of the season, but coach Hansi Flick relied on Wojciech Szczęsny in the decisive games, which the club had signed after the injury.
Hamann showed understanding of the situation: it was the club’s good right to act on the transfer market. For ter Stegen, however, the current situation after the long break is “ungrateful”. It is now crucial that the goalkeeper plays regularly again.
As the newspaper “Sport” reports, sports director Deco Ter Stegen should leave the opportunity to either stay or to check. The keeper’s high content also plays a role. Barça’s tense financial situation had already been shown at the beginning of the year when there were difficulties in registration by Dani Olmo.
According to “Marca”, the situation around Ter Stegen “will be more difficult to solve from day to day”. The upcoming commitment of Joan Garcia for rumored 25 million euros further tightened the competition.
