Flow rain caused difficult conditions at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne. High jumper Christina Honsel and the 4×100 meter relay of the women around Gina Lückenkemper are almost unimpressed.
Cool 18 degrees and violent rain, the weather was not exactly on the side of the athletes this Wednesday evening (20.08.2025) in Lausanne. The water stood on the track, and the competition judges desperately tried to skim off the water masses accumulated under the beam beam with Lübeck -Hütchen – with manageable success.
Honsel celebrates first Diamond League victory
But not everyone was in a mood and performance. Like Christina Honsel, who had just made it into the exquisite circle of two-meter jumpers a week and a half in Heilbronn. Now the German high jump champion from TV Wattenscheid 01 was refueled around three and a half weeks before the World Cup in Tokyo (13th to 21st September) with her first Diamond League victory.
A remarkable 1.91 m in the scatter-like rain was enough for the form-like 28-year-old, who is also qualified for the final of the most important athletics series in the world in Zurich in a week, for a shared victory with the same altitude Nicola Olyslagers (Australia) and Maria Zodzik (Poland).
Imke Onnen (Cologne Athletics) that had increased to 1.98 meters in Heilbronn was sixth (1.86). World record player Jaroslawa Mahutschich from Ukraine did without further attempts after two failed jumps with a view to the weather.
Lückenkemper leads sprint relay to victory
The 4×100-meter relay of women provided another success in Switzerland-especially thanks to a strong performance by Gina Lückenkemper. The quartet around Sina Mayer, Rebekka Haase, Sophia Junk and final runner Lückenkemper won in 42.53 seconds before the Netherlands (42.60 seconds) and Switzerland (42.81 seconds) – albeit in the absence of several strong nations.
Lea Meyer, however, experienced an evening to forget about 3000 meters. The 27-year-old from VfL Löningen, who previously delivered a strong summer season, probably also rose with a view to the relentless conditions.
Lyles again only second
For Olympic champion Noah Lyles followed shortly after the shock of Chorzów in Poland, when he was over 100 meters against the Olympic second Kishane Thompson, the next defeat against a Jamaican: Oblique Seville won in 9.87 seconds.
US star Lyles, who had entered the season late after an injury, had to be satisfied with second place after an extremely weak start (10.02). “I just had a terrible response time,” said Lyles: “I feel good physically and I am confident that every race will get better.” Third came to the field Blake (Jamaica/10.02).
Oblique Seville cheered his victory in Lausanne.
Olympic champion Hodgkinson trumps up again
Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson left over 800 meters just four days after her brilliant comeback in Chorzów, when she conjured up the world’s best time of 1: 54.74 minutes on the track, the next top performance followed. The British shone in her second race after a long break due to thigh problems despite the demanding conditions with 1: 55.69 seconds and improved the 23-year-old meeting record. The World Cup can come for the 23 -year -old European champion.
Cordell Tinch (USA) showed over 110 meters of hurdles in his win in 12.98. In the women’s hurdle sprint, the Dutch nadine Visser (12.45 seconds) defeated Olympic champion Masai Russell (USA/12.53). The Swiss European Champion of Hall Ditaji Kambundji ran third (12.54) under the cheers of her compatriots. World record player Tobi Amusan from Nigeria was only fifth (12.82).
Altmeister Lavillenie solves the World Cup ticket
While women’s pole vault had to be canceled on Wednesday due to the weather in the middle of the competition, the men Emmanouil Karalis had underlined his good shape on the eve of the main program.
The Olympic third from Greece mastered 6.02 meters on the bank of Lake Geneva and thus secured victory in the absence of world record holder Armand Duplantis (Sweden). Old master Renaud Lavillenie (France) crossed 5.82 meters – third place and the World Cup ticket. His compatriot Thibaut Collet became second.
The next meeting of the series is already on Friday (22.08.2025) in Brussels. The final will take place in Zurich in the coming week (27./88 August). There, the respective winners of the 14 disciplines each receive $ 30,000.
