At the Tour de France, the Team Alpecin-Deceuninck had a tragic turn on Monday. The diagnosis of the violation of Jasper Philipsen is now known.
It actually looked like that it could be a successful Tour de France for sprint star Jasper Philipsen again. After all, the Belgian won the first stage in Lille and secured the yellow jersey. He started the third stage in the green jersey before there was a serious fall that was not self-indebted and thus the tour. The team Alpecin-Deceuninck has now announced the diagnosis of the injury.
On Instagram, the team announced that Philipsen had suffered a collarbone break. “An operation will definitely be required,” Alpecin-Deceuninck continued. In addition, the sprinter has “at least one broken rib, possibly two”. The team concluded with the words: “He will be transferred to the hospital in Herentals as soon as possible, where he is operated on. We wish Jasper all the best and get well soon.”
Philipsen’s team -mate Mathieu van der Poel, who won the second stage and also wears the yellow jersey after the third, said on Monday evening after the fall at ITV: “It is difficult to be happy. We are fighting for Jasper.”
How exactly did the fall of Philipsen? The fall of the Belgian Laurenz Rex, which brought Cofidis driver Bryan Coquard out of balance. Coquard slipped into the front wheel of Philipsen. The latter crashed over his handlebar and landed on his shoulder. In doing so, he also pulled away grazes on his back. First his teammates were still waiting for Philipsen. When they continued, it was clear that the sprint star had to give up on the tour, otherwise his team would not have left him behind.
Philipsen ended the Tour de France in the green jersey in 2023 and was one of the top candidates on it this year too.
