Collective bargaining begins for the 170,000 postmen, parcel deliverers and other employees of Deutsche Post.

The Verdi union is demanding, among other things, seven percent more wages and additional vacation days for a period of twelve months. “The still high costs and food prices can only be overcome with significant wage increases for employees,” said Verdi negotiator Andrea Kocsis, according to the statement. The vast majority of postal employees still earn less than the median income in Germany.

According to Verdi, nine out of ten postal employees also work under high physical strain, for example when dealing with packages weighing up to 31.5 kilograms and extreme weather conditions. Additional vacation days are therefore essential to protect the health of employees. “Sickness rates are at record levels,” said Kocsis.

Deutsche Post said the union’s demands ignored the situation in the company. In view of the high investment requirements and shrinking letter volumes, the network agency does not provide the necessary leeway for price increases, it said in a statement. In addition, the postal service has increased salaries by an average of 11.5 percent since the last deal. Nevertheless, Swiss Post will approach the negotiations constructively.

At the turn of the year, Deutsche Post increased postage significantly. A standard letter now costs 95 cents instead of 85, and other types of mail have also become more expensive.

The DHL share was temporarily 0.64 percent lower at 34.27 euros via XETRA.
