The next big tournament is just around the corner for German handball players. The DHB team wants to impress at the World Cup – and could win a lot of money.
Bonuses play a major role in competitive sports. The German team could also receive a large sum at the upcoming handball world championship if coach Alfred Gislason’s team makes it far. The DHB team will receive up to 500,000 euros if they win the title. This is reported by the Editorial Network Germany (RND).
The German Handball Association (DHB) has set a team bonus of 475,000 euros for World Cup gold. If more than 19 players are used, the total will rise to half a million euros. DHB President Andreas Michelmann explained to the RND: “This is a team bonus, not a per capita bonus like in football.”
But it wasn’t just the gold medal that would be rewarded. The DHB team would also be rewarded for silver and bronze – as well as for reaching the quarter-finals. For silver there is 350,000 euros, for bronze 250,000 euros, for fourth place 125,000 euros and for reaching the quarter-finals (fifth to eighth places) 60,000 euros.
The bonus negotiations were handled by Michelmann, sports director Ingo Meckes and the German captain Johannes Golla. Michelmann explained: “The bonuses were then confirmed by the Executive Board via circular resolution – and unanimously.” The regulation only affects the athletes, not the coaches.
At the 2023 World Cup, the title bonus was 400,000 euros, but now it is higher. Why? Michelmann: “We have higher sponsorship income, so we can distribute more.”
