In a dramatic game, Tunisia prevailed against Algeria. This means they are the last German opponent in the main round.

The main round opponents of the German handball players at the World Championship have been determined. In a group of six, national coach Alfred Gislason’s selection will face Olympic champions Denmark and outsiders Italy and Tunisia in Herning, Denmark.

Italy’s handball men are taking part in a World Cup for the first time since 1997. The Tunisians, who secured their main round ticket with a 26:25 win against Algeria, have missed out on a place in the top ten at the World Cup since 2005. They scored the winning goal at the last second against the Algerians, but would have been through even if they had drawn. The dramatic final phase still took its toll on Tunisia’s coach Mohamed Ali Sighir: after the winning goal, he sank to his knees in a dramatic gesture.

The German main round games take place on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The best two teams qualify for the quarterfinals in Oslo.

With the victory over Switzerland, the DHB selection qualified early for the main round. Before the final preliminary round game against the Czech Republic this Sunday (6 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online), Julian Köster’s team is top of the table. If Germany defends first place, there could be a new edition of the Olympic final on Tuesday. In the summer, the DHB team lost to the Danes in Paris with 26:39.
