The goal line technology has been around in football for a long time. Now the frequently discussed introduction also becomes concrete in handball. The starting shot is given for the next season.
The goal line technology will be introduced in the handball Bundesliga for the new season. League boss Frank Bohmann said at the request of the German Press Agency: “I can confirm that we will introduce this to the first division for the coming season.” Previously, the “picture” had reported on the decision at a presidium meeting.
With the decision, the league wants to further improve the quality of the referee decisions, explained Bohmann. According to “BILD”, the costs for the introduction of technology amount to 500,000 euros. The league boss did not comment on the exact sum.
There is already a video evidence in the Bundesliga. However, this is not used for decisions whether the ball has completely exceeded the goal line, since corresponding cameras have been missing in the goal and at the level of the goal line. In contrast, the goal line technology has been used several times in the final 4 tournaments in the DHB Cup.
The discussion about the introduction of technology had already started speed last year. The topic was present, especially after the Bundesliga top game between SC Magdeburg and the Füchsen Berlin in December.
After the 31:31 draw, the Berliners were annoyed that a goal from Lasse Andersson was not recognized. In the absence of goal line technology, the referees had to make a factual decision at the time and did not give the goal.
