Andreas Wolff reacts to the reporting about the position in the German goal. Reason: The cast in the main round game against Denmark. Wolff becomes clear.

The discussion about the German goalkeeper decision after the European Championship defeat against Denmark upset DHB keeper Andreas Wolff. The veteran reacted clearly to the public debate before the final.

After the 26:31 in the main round game against the Danes, a discussion arose about the role of Wolff and David Späth. Wolff sharply criticized how this was handled. “I find it incredibly disrespectful to David how this issue was and is being handled. That was totally disrespectful and makes me extremely upset,” he said to some experts before the reunion with Denmark in the European Championship final on Sunday (from 6 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online).

In the game last Monday, Späth looked after the German goal for 50 minutes. The fact that Wolff largely remained on the bench surprised many spectators. The 34-year-old had previously impressed with 22 saves in the game against Norway.

Former national players also expressed criticism. 2007 world champion Pascal Hens said at Dyn: “I thought: Okay, let’s give it up.” Stefan Kretzschmar confirmed that Späth played a good game, but spoke of a questionable effect. “What can that mean as a sign for the team? How do I take this as a team in one of the all-important games?” asked the 2004 Olympic silver medalist.

For Wolff, the debate is incomprehensible. “It’s amazing that you’ve been playing handball for so many years and yet have so little knowledge of people. We said before the tournament that we were a goalkeeper duo that worked because of our balance and the quality of both of them. And then David starts in a game and the whole world loses its head. I find that disgusting,” said the keeper.

With a view to the final, the goalkeeper from the German record champions THW Kiel sent a clear message to the critics: “If David starts tomorrow, it is by no means a sign that Denmark is not being taken seriously or that they are giving something away.”
