After the injury of Nico Schlotterbeck, the focus now shifts to Antonio Rüdiger and Jonathan Tah. Their last joint start, however, ended in disaster.

The last joint starting appearance for Antonio Rüdiger and Jonathan Tah in the national team is one they’d likely prefer to forget. It was during the disappointing start to the World Cup qualifiers in Slovakia, where the two center-backs had a forgettable evening, losing 0-2. The media quickly labeled the duo as a “security risk,” with Rüdiger being mocked as the “sluggish team leader.”

Fast forward nine months, and Rüdiger and Tah are set to hold together the German defense in pursuit of their fifth star. With Schlotterbeck out due to an ankle ligament injury, coach Julian Nagelsmann is banking on his veteran players. Is this a concern? DFB sports director Rudi Völler reassures fans.

While Rüdiger is “a different type” compared to the skillful Schlotterbeck, Völler highlighted his “qualities in aerial battles and duels with his speed.” The 33-year-old’s extensive experience, particularly after renewing his contract with Champions League record holders Real Madrid, was also praised.

But does the chemistry between Rüdiger and the three years younger Tah still work as effectively as it did during the home Euros two years ago? The dynamics have shifted.

“He’s the new boss,” Rüdiger admitted, recognizing Tah’s growth. As Tah approaches his 50th international cap against Ecuador, he has gained significant momentum at Bayern Munich.

Rüdiger and Tah’s Past Struggles

Rüdiger (with 84 caps) is expected to benefit from Tah’s new leadership skills. The second half against Ivory Coast, which ended in a 2-1 victory, served as a morale booster. While Rüdiger and Tah did not perfectly harmonize, the DFB squad managed to keep a clean sheet and turned the game around.

However, coach Nagelsmann hasn’t fielded Rüdiger and Tah together since that loss in Slovakia. Just three days later, Rüdiger started again against Northern Ireland, and shortly before the end of that game, he made way for the incoming Tah. An injury sidelined the former Stuttgart player for some time, leading Nagelsmann to settle on a core partnership of Tah and Schlotterbeck.

Rüdiger accepted his new role undaunted, earning respect within the DFB camp as he lauded his successors. He acknowledged that being “on the bench is not easy,” but praised Tah for his physicality. He also mentioned Schlotterbeck’s “golden left foot.”

Concerns Ahead of World Cup 2026

Jürgen Klopp has expressed concerns regarding the new center-back duo. “We are used to seeing Schlotterbeck dribble into midfield and then distribute the diagonal ball. This is a critical element of our gameplay, and without him, we may struggle,” he commented.

While Rüdiger performed admirably during his reintroduction, he cannot replicate the particular “left foot” finesse that Schlotterbeck brought. The four-time world champion’s buildup play will certainly be altered heading into the Ecuador match.

Despite having achieved their first goal as group winners, Rüdiger and Tah are eager to ensure that the nightmare experienced in Bratislava is not repeated.
