4th place after most missions
After the 4:2 (1:0) in the last group game against Costa Rica and the associated loss at the World Cup in Qatar, Thomas Müller addressed emotional words to the German viewers in an interview with “ARD”. Although the 33-year-old did not officially announce his retirement from the German national team, he spoke of the possibility that it could have been his last game in DFB dress and thanked the fans for their support. However, he has now made it clear that he will continue to be open to assignments.
“I was emotional after the Costa Rica game. I gave it a lot of thought and also spoke to Hansi (Flick; ed.). As long as I’m a professional footballer, I’ll always be available. When? How? If? The national coach will decide that,” said Müller at a press conference at Bayern Munich’s training camp in Doha. Just a few days after leaving, the offensive player put his statements into perspective and announced that he first wanted to talk to his wife Lisa and Flick.

“You have to deal with it and the most important thing is that you convert this frustration and pain into energy,” explained Müller, who was in the starting XI in all three games at the World Cup in Qatar and was not involved in a goal. “Basically, regardless of personal details, we have to manage as a common football nation to play successful German men’s football again. The women did a lot better in the summer.”
With 121 international matches, Müller is fourth in the history of the German national team and behind Lukas Podolski (third with 130 games) is the active professional with the most experience in DFB dress. Joachim Löw had removed Müller from the squad at the beginning of 2019, but brought him back for the European Championships in summer 2021. He has been under Flick ever since.
