DFB team: AC Milan’s Thiaw is out for international matches – no subsequent call-up

National coach Julian Nagelsmann has to do without central defender Malick Thiaw for the two international matches at the end of the year. The 22-year-old from AC Milan is expecting new blood in the coming days and canceled his trip to Frankfurt am Main to prepare for the games against Turkey in Berlin on Saturday and against Austria in Vienna three days later. Mats Hummels (back problems) and Leon Goretzka (muscular problems), who were injured at the Bundesliga weekend, had already arrived on Sunday – the duo helped toss the coin at the NFL game in the Frankfurt Arena.

Hummels was substituted in the 28th minute of BVB’s 1-2 defeat at VfB Stuttgart. Goretzka was not in the squad for FC Bayern’s 4-2 win against 1. FC Heidenheim. The DFB had already confirmed before the NFL game that both would still travel. “My back didn’t hold up either, unfortunately that happens from time to time given the number of games we play. It usually takes 3-4 days until it works again (I definitely have experience with it) and then I should be fit again,” wrote the veteran on Instagram.

This means that the national coach initially has 26 players from his squad at his disposal; Nagelsmann decided not to make a subsequent nomination because of Thiaw’s cancellation. On Friday, the DFB head coach had to replace Robin Gosens with David Raum at short notice for the same reason. The Berlin full-back is staying in Berlin because of the birth of his second child.
