So far everything has gone according to plan for Nick Woltemade in Newcastle. That changed suddenly on Sunday. The striker scored an own goal – in the derby, of all places.
Bitter afternoon for DFB star Nick Woltemade in the Premier League: The Newcastle United striker scored the winner on Sunday, but not for his own team, but for the opposing team – and in the derby, of all places. The game at AFC Sunderland ended 0-1 from the Magpies’ perspective.
The goal of the day came shortly after the break. Sunderland’s Nordi Mukiele crossed the ball sharply in front of the Newcastle goal in the 46th minute. Woltemade flew up and wanted to clear the ball. But the 23-year-old headed the ball into his own net in the best striker style. Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale had no chance to block the ball.
Afterwards, Woltemade seemed completely shocked by his own mishap. While the Sunderland players cheered wildly in front of their own fans, the former Stuttgart player was tearing his hair out.
So far, the Newcastle adventure has been an extremely successful one for Woltemade. The international, who moved from the Bundesliga to England in the summer, has scored five times in 13 games in the Premier League for his new employer. Woltemade has also been successful for Newcastle in the Champions League.
In the league, the team is still lagging behind expectations. Newcastle only has 22 points after 16 games and is twelfth. Arch-rival Sunderland has 26 points after the victory and has moved up to seventh place for the time being. For the “Black Cats” the success against Newcastle is also their first derby win since 2015.
