VfB Stuttgart fought itself in the final of the DFB Cup thanks to a strong Angelo Stiller and an accurate Nick Woltemade against RB Leipzig. RB was particularly stronger in the first phase of the game, but VfB keeper Alexander Nübel shone. In the end, the Swabians clearly won 3-1 (1-0).
Stuttgart benefited early from a greater presence in the initial phase. National player Angelo Stiller Drosch a header from Leipzig’s defense from almost 20 meters from a central position of Volley into the goal (5th). Leipzig’s Belgian replacement goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt saw the shot very late and showed almost no defense reaction. Shortly after the restart, Nick Woltemade (57th), Benjamin Sesko shortened quickly (62nd). Stuttgart did not swim, but increased by Jamie Leweling (75th).
“It’s the biggest, that’s a dream now”said VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß at the ZDF microphone in a first reaction, but quickly broke off the interview: “Sorry, I have to go to the photo”and stormed to his team where he slipped into the photos on his stomach. “The last few weeks have not been easy for us, so it was clear that we had to pull the thing today”said Stiller about the sports show, “And now it has to build self -confidence and show it every week.” And about his goal he said: “I don’t meet such a shot again. Either he goes over the stadium or he strikes.” Nick Woltemade praised the Stuttgart fans: “What was going on here – ‘insane’.” And he added: “Now it is celebrated!”. Zsolt Löw, coach of the guests, said at the ARD microphone: “I believe that in many, many phases we were the better team. We were better in many statistical areas – but statistics don’t win games. The disappointment is great.”
RB recovers quickly
After the early Stuttgart Tor, Leipzig recovered very quickly. Because the goal was something like a classic “Hello wach!”-call for the guests. In contrast to the games before, the guest eleven presented itself aggressively and present under the interim coach Löw, which was just used, especially in midfield. Second balls were often a safe prey of the Leipziger, who appeared more and more in front of the box of the home side after winning the ball.
Again and again RB Leipzig found not only the gap in the Stuttgart defense chain, but also the Lois Openda, which is optimally starting in the interfaces. And then the duel was called once and time again: Openda against VfB keeper Nübel. But both in the 15th and the 17th minute the goalkeeper remained the winner, and the goalkeeper was also characterized by a shot from Xavi Simons. Also worth mentioning a selfless head of the head by Jeff Chabot, who blocked a massive attempt from that openda from a short distance.
Stuttgart resistance? Almost false: Woltemade did not end up with no conclusion during the first section of the game, Ermedin Demirovic on a harmless attempt.
Hoeneß ‘ Speech acts
At the beginning of the second half, Stuttgart was changed in the game approach. The Sebastian Hoeneß team looked more aggressive and no longer allowed these simple ball losses and final chances of the guests. And soon the second goal was scored: After Woltemade failed with a massive header on Vandordt, the U21 international combined with a storm partner Demirovic in the 16 of the Leipziger and castle flat with right. Again, the goalkeeper of the guests had no chance.
But Stuttgart’s joy only lasted briefly: When VfB was unable to clarify a ball clearly enough, Atakan Karazor misjudged himself during a defense campaign. The defense boss Willi Orban’s defense boss served Sesko, who scored from a left -wing position. Leipzig was back in the game.
Schiri Jablonski confidently
Critical game campaigns increased in the ever faster game: Possible handball from Orban, duels – but referee Sven Jablonski had a good overview at any time and was not taught a better one several times by his Var Sören Stork. So not in the 73rd minute: The strong driver of Stiller brought a corner inwards, Woltemade took off with his head. Keeper Vandordt parried, but exactly in front of Leweling’s feet, which did not take the chance. Leipzig’s defense quickly promoted the ball out of the goal, but the thing was clear: no offside, ball behind the line: gate!
In the final phase, Leipzig threw everything forward again, but was lucky that a soulful lifter from Woltemade only fell on the crossbar shortly after the third goal. Sesko also hit the beams again, but a second goal did not want to fall for the Saxons, but also in the five -minute injury time.
On May 24th, the two traditional clubs by Arminia Bielefeld and VfB Stuttgart face each other in the final in Berlin.
