- For the women’s team of 1. FC Union Berlin it is once again in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. On Saturday afternoon, the “Iron Ladies” lost 0-1 to their league rivals from Jena. Toma Ihlenburg scored the golden goal.
The “Iron Ladies”, who were still extremely weak in terms of replacements, took command on Saturday afternoon in front of 4,664 spectators in the An der Alten Försterei stadium from Begin – but initially did not create any chances to score. It wasn’t until the 14th minute that things became dangerous: Sophie Weidauer didn’t hit the ball properly after a high cross from the left wing, then Antonia Halverkamp’s follow-up shot narrowly missed the box. Eight minutes later, the Union fans were already screaming for goal, but Jena’s captain Toma Ihlenburg deflected a last-ditch header from Dina Orschmann onto the crossbar (22′).
On the other side (26th), Rieke Tietz appeared in front of the FCU goal after a quick counterattack by the guests and shot wide to the left. With the last action before the half-time whistle, Jena took the lead somewhat unexpectedly: after a corner, 21-year-old cup debutant Nadine Böhi, who was replacing the injured Cara Bösl in the Union goal, rushed past the ball in the crowd in the six-yard box – and Ihlenburg only had to nod off (45th +1). From Köpenick’s perspective, the score at halftime was 0:1.
The object of desire: the DFB Cup in the An der Alten Försterei stadium.
After the break, the guests made their first dangerous move: Weidauer deflected a long-range shot from Noemi Gentile over the crossbar (54′). Shortly afterwards, the crossbar trembled for the second time that afternoon: Once again it was Dina Orschmann who headed the ball into the Jena goal after a corner and was unsuccessful (56th). Coach Ailien Poese’s team pushed for the equalizer in this phase. Weidauer held his own in the penalty area and hit the side netting (59′).
But FC Carl Zeiss survived the Köpenick attacks unscathed and was subsequently able to provide more relief. In the 80th minute, the Thuringians missed their great chance to make the preliminary decision when they sloppily exploited a numerical advantage on the counterattack. 1. FC Union, on the other hand, hardly had any chances to finish, even in five minutes of stoppage time – and were ultimately eliminated from the cup competition 0-1.
