mid-term conclusion
The first half between Union Berlin and FC St. Pauli was very entertaining. The Irons started with a lot of pressure and immediately played several standards. After the fast-paced first few minutes, the game calmed down briefly until St. Pauli appeared in front for the first time. Kyereh won a free kick and then converted it himself. After that, Union continued to push for an equaliser. The guests from Hamburg were deep in the back. Although Berlin only had a few serious chances, the pressure on the Hamburg defense was enormous. At the end of the first 45 minutes, a slip by St. Pauli goalkeeper Smarsch led to the deserved equalizer. Halftime two promises the best cup entertainment.

Tooor for 1. FC Union Berlin, 1: 1 by Sheraldo Becker

Baumgartl plays a good long ball into the path of Awoniyi. Dreifus uses his body well in the running duel with the striker, so that Smarsch could actually get the ball before the Berliner. But then the goalkeeper slips briefly. As a result, he misses the decisive meters and Awoniyi gets the ball. The attacker pulls away directly in front of Smarsch, who is able to deflect the shot. But Becker gets the margin and makes it technically demanding with the left from the air into the goal.

St. Pauli again with a relief attack. Burgstaller is played on the right corner of the penalty area and doesn’t hesitate. His volley goes way over it. But such offensive actions are very important for the Kiezkicker, so that the pressure from the Iron is not too great.

Baumgartl brings a cross from the left half field into the middle. Trimmel just missed the second post. But it is striking how often central defender Baumgartl appears up front. St. Pauli is really deep. So far, however, Union has not come up with an idea.

Maximilian Dittgen has to leave the field injured. He obviously has a muscular problem in his thigh. Since the striker played full-back today, he is replaced by defender Lars Ritzka.

Becker puts pressure on Paqarada on the right and conquers the ball. He goes to the baseline and crosses into the middle. Smarsch fists the ball high in the air. Then Haraguchi goes into a header duel, with a hamburger going down. But the referee allows it to continue. St. Pauli can finally clarify.

34

21:21

Timo Schulz has thought of something for Union’s attacking full-backs. St. Pauli is deep with a five-man chain when the Berliners have possession of the ball. Striker Maximilian Dittgen then takes over the position of left-back. This is how Trimmel and Gießelmann should be kept in check.

21:19

Becker has the next good chance for the Köpenicker. Haraguchi plays the striker on the right side of the penalty area. Becker has his back to the goal, but turns with Medić behind him and then pulls away immediately. Smarsch fends off the powerful shot to the corner. The standard fizzles out.

Union continues as before the goal. The hosts have more of the ball and often dive close to the penalty area. But then it usually becomes a bit imprecise.

27

21:14

The lead for St. Pauli came as a surprise and of course plays into Hamburg’s hands. They didn’t really want to make the game anyway. Instead, Union’s counterattack must now show what they can do with the ball.

24

21:12

Almost equalizing for Union. Trimmel goes into the penalty area on the right and crosses in front of the goal. Prömel misses the ball with his head. At the second post, Gießelmann is already a step too far and therefore does not reach the ball anymore. If he can get there, it’s a safe goal.

Tooor for FC St. Pauli, 0:1 by Daniel Kyereh

The foul does it himself. Kyereh, Hartel and Paqarada are ready for the free kick. Paqarada passes the ball to Hartel, who lays down for Kyereh’s right foot. The noble technician flicks halfway up the inside towards the right post. His shot isn’t perfectly placed, but Rønnow still can’t save the ball. The wall should have reacted better and Rønnow didn’t look too good either.

Kyereh gets a free kick from 20 yards away with a passionate dribbling through the center. Baumgartl fouled him.

1.FC Union Berlin FC St Pauli

21:04

Awoniyi has the first shot on goal of the game. The Berlin attacker wobbles a guest defender on the right corner of the penalty area and then shoots with the right. But he doesn’t hit the ball properly. So it’s easy prey for Smarsch.

1.FC Union Berlin FC St Pauli

16

21:03

Union only runs to the guests from the middle line. This gives St. Pauli the opportunity to build up the game calmly. But as soon as it goes over the center line, the ball is usually gone.

1.FC Union Berlin FC St Pauli

14

21:01

Union is still missing the precision in the last third. But control of the game is clearly in the hands of the home side. St. Pauli has not been able to keep up with the physical game of the irons.

Haraguchi plays a good vertical ball to Becker, who has too much space between the lines. The offensive man asserts himself strongly and then crosses from the right into the middle. There, a teammate just barely misses.

Trimmel tries it from 25 meters half-left position with the right. His shot flies into the wall. Haraguchi gets the margin and takes full risk. His drop kick goes well over it.

It’s a lively game in the first few minutes. Awoniyi puts his heel into Prömel’s run on the left side. He then sends Becker to the baseline. Becker’s cross is blocked, but afterwards there is a free kick near the goal for Union.

St. Pauli launches the first rapid counterattack. Kyereh cleverly lets the ball through in the middle of the field. Hartel has some space, runs towards the defense and then sticks into Dittgen’s run on the left. But his pass lacks the power. A Union defender intervenes.

In the round of 16 of the cup, FC St. Pauli pulled off a major coup by knocking Borussia Dortmund out of the competition. If there is another small surprise against the Bundesliga team from Berlin today, the club’s record in the cup from 2006 would be set by reaching the semi-finals. Union prevailed against Hertha in the previous round in the capital derby. For the Köpenicker it would also be the second semi-final in the club’s history. The first time (2001) they even reached the final. There, however, the winner was Schalke 04.

19:54

It’s the clash of two iconic clubs that have been doing a good job lately. Union is in a strong seventh place in the Bundesliga. The second qualification for the European competition in a row is within reach. The Kiezkicker from Hamburg are knocking on the door to the Bundesliga this season. Although the lead in the standings, which Timo Schulz’s team had held for more than half of the previous matchdays, has now been given up, the only thing standing in the way of third place is a direct promotion spot at the moment only the goal difference.
