Detained WZA nurse worked in the lung department

The nurse suspected of being involved in the death of several patients in the Wilhelmina Hospital Assen (WZA) worked in the lung department. Corona patients were nursed in that department. Hans Mulder of the hospital’s board of directors confirms this.

The criminal investigation of the Public Prosecution Service focuses on the period from March 2020 to May 2022, the time of the corona pandemic.

“If someone had told me a few weeks ago that this could happen, you wouldn’t believe it,” says Mulder. “Of course it has an incredibly large impact on our employees and patients. These employees worked very hard during the corona period to keep the care up. And then it is so intense that this is now coming over them.”

The board of directors informed the staff yesterday. “That was an emotional meeting,” says Mulder. “People are sad and also ask questions. The same questions we have. We have more questions than answers at the moment.”

“And yet you see a team whatever it wants to do together. And we have to do it together. We really have to talk to each other here in the coming period to ultimately give it a place. keep delivering.”

For patients with questions, the hospital has a phone number made available. “It is of course also intense for our patients,” says Mulder. “We have also informed our employees how they can answer patients’ questions. In this way, we also hope to be able to continue to give the good feeling that should be in a hospital.”
