According to a spokesperson for the municipality of Wijdemeren, the destruction was caused late on Monday evening. Photos show that paving stones, traffic signs and construction fence legs have been thrown through the windows. Fences have also been knocked down. It is still unknown how many people may have participated in the destruction.

Last week, demonstrations took place several evenings at the largely empty town hall in Loosdrecht, sometimes by hundreds of people at the same time. The Mobile Unit had to intervene several times. The week before, the municipality announced that 110 asylum seekers who urgently needed a place would move into the building.

The protests took on such a format that the plans were adjusted. The opening date was pushed back to May 6, and the number of simultaneous residents was reduced from 110 to 70. For some of the demonstrating groups, such as anti-immigration platform Defend Netherlands, that is not enough: they want the reception plans to be scrapped altogether.
