Copenhagen prevails
FC Bayern missed out on winning Group A in the UEFA Youth League despite a 2-0 win at Manchester United on Tuesday. After six games, the Munich U19 talents coached by Michael Hartmann are one point behind FC Copenhagen with twelve points, who dispatched Galatasaray 6-0 and move straight into the round of 16.
Bayern first have to go to the playoffs on February 6th or 7th, 2024, which will be drawn on December 19th. A team from the so-called championship path is waiting there, possible defending champions AZ Alkmaar, FC Basel, FC Midtylland, FC Nantes, Olympiacos Piraeus, Partizan Belgrade or MSK Zilina. Mainz 05 is also in the playoffs this way, but cannot be drawn against Munich.
Defending champion Alkmaar: All Youth League winners since 2013/14
Captain Javier Fernández in the 25th minute and Michael Scott in the 79th put Bayern on the road to victory against Man United. The German record champions’ best results so far in the Youth League were the round of 16 in 2017/18 and 2019/20.
Meanwhile, 1. FC Union Berlin failed in its debut season in the youth competition as bottom of the group. On the sixth matchday there was a 0-2 defeat against Real Madrid in front of 6,500 fans in the An der Alten Försterei professional stadium thanks to a brace from Leverkusen loanee Iker Bravo (4th/61st). The “Royals” won the group ahead of SC Braga, who played 2-2 in Naples.
