Despite Heuer Fernandes’ own goal: HSV fights for a draw at FC St. Pauli

Highest win of the season for Schalke

Despite what was probably the strangest own goal in the history of the Hamburg city derby by goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes, HSV still avoided defeat in the explosive game at FC St. Pauli. With the 2:2 (0:2) in the top game of the 2nd Bundesliga, coach Tim Walter’s team at least saved a point from the table leaders from the neighborhood in the 110th edition of the city championship and avoided a setback in the promotion battle. Nevertheless, HSV has to fear for its second place after the 15th matchday. The undefeated Kiezklub (31 points) is still three points ahead of its rivals.

HSV keeper Heuer Fernandes provided the scene for the game in front of 29,153 spectators in the sold-out Millerntor Stadium. The guests took a short goal kick in the 27th minute via Stephan Ambrosius and Guilherme Ramos. After Ramos passed the ball to Heuer Fernandes, the ball bounced just in front of the goal.

The goalkeeper wanted to shoot the ball from the penalty area, but instead he hit the ball into his own goal to make it 0-2. For the 31-year-old it was the first own goal in his 180th second division game. St. Pauli captain Jackson Irvine (15th) shot his team into the lead after a corner. Goal scorer Robert Glatzel (58th) and Immanuel Pherai (60th) made up for their goalkeeper’s mishap within two minutes and saved another point.

Coach Fabian Hürzeler’s players dominated the game from the start, appeared more mature and had better play. Clear offensive actions alone were rare. However, HSV was initially disappointing and seemed to be continuing its disappointing away performances this season at the Millerntor Stadium, just seven kilometers from Volkspark.

After the break the conditions became more difficult due to snowfall. The guests coped better with the slippery surface and equalized with a double strike from Glatzel and Pherai. The game became more open. In the end the draw was fair.

Highest win of the season for Schalke – Koschinat’s debut fails

A mishap by a royal blue homegrown player paved the way for FC Schalke 04 to their biggest win of the season in the relegation battle and completely spoiled Uwe Koschinat’s start as coach at VfL Osnabrück.

Niklas Wiemann, who grew up in Schalke’s youth team and was part of the Royal Blues’ Bundesliga squad under coach Huub Stevens in 2019, directed the ball into his own net in the 21st minute in Schalke’s 4-0 (1-0) win. The German Football League initially did not consider the goal to be an own goal, but rather for Marcin Kaminski. The less clear 4-0 (70th) was an own goal by Florian Kleinhansl instead of a goal by Kenan Karaman. In between, Paul Seguin (49th) and Simon Terodde followed up with a penalty kick (63rd), also caused by Wiemann.

Thanks to the success at the start of the third-to-last matchday of the first half of the season, Schalke initially improved from the relegation relegation spot to 15th place. Much more important: they initially closed up to tenth place to within two points. And the lead over second-to-last Braunschweig initially grew to eight points, and that over bottom-placed Osnabrück to nine points. Koschinat was presented on Thursday as the successor to promotion coach Tobias Schweinsteiger, who was on leave.
