Desmond Tutu cremated and interred in St. George’s Cathedral | Abroad

The body of the former archbishop lay in state for several days in the cathedral, so that South Africans could say goodbye to Tutu. He lay there in the cheapest coffin, the way he liked it. For the past few days, the cathedral has chimed the bells in honor of Tutu for ten minutes every afternoon.

St. George came to be known as “the cathedral of the people” through Tutu, among others, and became a symbol of democracy. Tutu became world famous for his nonviolent struggle against apartheid and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

Tutu died “peacefully” in a Cape Town nursing home on Sunday. The world around the world reacted with sadness to his death.
