World championship captain Dennis Schröder was racistically insulted by opposing fans during the third European Championship preliminary game against Lithuania. “Unfortunately, they did a monkey noise at half-time. I cannot accept that,” said the German basketball player playmaker after the 107: 88 (55:47) victory in Tampere/Finland in Magenta Sport, “Racism shouldn’t belong here.”
Basically, a “horny atmosphere” was in charge, “the fans always travel,” said Schröder about the Lithuanians. But two fell out of the role and were thrown out of the hall after clues from the German staff. “It just doesn’t belong to this sport. I get it with you for the first time today,” said Schröder, “that’s sad.”
Later Schröder puts on again on Instagram – and became very clear. “Stop racism! It happened to me for the first time … @Vinijr, now I know how it feels.” A message to Brazil’s football star Vinicius Junior. The Real Madrid player has repeatedly fought racist incidents in the stadium in the past.
Schröder took a breath of his anger: “I wish that the people who did the monkey sounds would have the courage to do that outside the arena. Because I swear by my father’s grave: Then they would have to wear the consequences that they escape in the arena.”
Interim national coach Alan Ibrahimagic also criticized the behavior of the fans. “I didn’t hear it myself. But I noticed that he was very excited. In sports and in competition you fight against each other, but things like that have no place,” emphasized Ibrahimagic, who, like in the previous two tournament games, represented the sick national coach Álex Mumbrú.
“I didn’t notice it. But in general it is one thing that is known for a very long time,” said Isaac Bonga, like Schröder a black player: “And it’s a thing that we don’t want in basketball.” The German team prematurely solved the ticket for the round of 16 by winning the Lithuanians.
