The Iserlohn Roosters celebrated another victory in the DEL after seven defeats in a row.
The Sauerlanders celebrated a 3:2 (1:2, 1:0, 0:0, 1:0) win after extra time against the Grizzlys Wolfsburg on Saturday evening and thus their first points since October 10th. The IEC remains second to last in the table, but was able to extend its lead over bottom team Dresden to three points.
Wolfsburg scores when they are outnumbered
Iserlohn started the game with Andy Jenike in goal, possibly because the Roosters have lost every game with Hendrik Hane in the goal. The guests started very offensively and scored their first goals. Iserlohn only had their first chance in the 7th minute through Jakub Borzecki, and Spencer Machacek almost immediately scored the opening goal for Wolfsburg. Instead of hanging their heads, the Roosters looked for a quick answer and found it: Christian Thomas scored the equalizer (9th).
Shortly afterwards, Iserlohn had his first power play situation. Instead of using this as a guide, the bell rang on the other side. Seconds before the end of the two minutes, Matthew White gave the Grizzlys the lead again (12th). Even though Iserlohn held up well, shortly before the end of the first third there were chants of “We want to see you fight” from the home fans.
Napravnik with the equalizer
The second third began with a great chance for Iserlohn by Thomas, which Wolfsburg goalie Strahlmeier thwarted (22′). Shortly afterwards, the home team had their second power play, but couldn’t use it either. When Wolfsburg had the majority for the first time, the IEC was also able to mount a dangerous counterattack, which led to Jimmy Lambert being suspended (31′). But Iserlohn also followed suit with two minutes against Johannes Huß (32nd).
Tyler Boland had the next big chance of the game when the score was equal in the 37th minute when he ran alone towards Strahlmeier but was unable to overcome him. Julian Napravnik did better, also appearing alone in front of Strahlmeier and scoring the well-deserved 2-2 (38th).
Cornel redeems Iserlohn in overtime
The final third began with another Iserlohn power play, which Wolfsburg once again defended strongly. In equal numbers, it was the Lower Saxons who set the tone. After a penalty for Taro Jentzsch, the Grizzlys were in the majority for two minutes. With a lot of effort and a strong Jenike in goal, Iserlohn remained without conceding a goal in this period of pressure for Wolfsburg.
After that there were chances on both sides, with slightly better opportunities on the visitors’ side. Wolfsburg hit the crossbar twice, while Napravnik was denied by Strahlmeier for the IEC. By reaching extra time, the Roosters had at least secured partial success after seven games without a point.
Wolfsburg also had the better chances in overtime, but the Roosters scored the decisive goal. Eric Cornel redeemed Iserlohn with the celebrated 3-2 winning goal.
After International break against Ingolstadt
Apart from the national players, the Roosters now have 13 days to regenerate and prepare for further tasks. Due to the international break, the league will not continue until matchday 18 on Friday, November 14th. Then Iserlohn welcomes the ERC Ingolstadt in its own hall (7.30 p.m.).
