After Nick Woltemade’s dismissal in the 1-2 against Werder Bremen, VfB Stuttgart is protesting against the decision. The Swabians had already announced that.
CEO Alexander Wehrle had it after the 1: 2 against Werder Bremen on Sunday evening Already announced, now it is official: VfB Stuttgart has protest against the dismissal of Nick Woltemade at the German Football Association (DFB). The club announced on Monday (April 14th, 2025).
“The reason for the objection is that there was an error from the referee,” said VfB in a message: “After the game, referee Daniel Schlager has his decision to show Nick Woltemade the yellow-red card as wrong.”
Wehrle and coach Sebastian Hoeneß had already reported this on Sunday. Accordingly, Schlager spoke of a “wrong decision” after the game. They hope that they can prevent a lock for Woltemade after its yellow-red card in the 65th minute.
Hoeneß spoke of “wrong” decision
Already on Sunday Hoeneß had hardly got out of the shake of the head whether it was dismissed: “For me it was not a good game line, I just have to say that. It was an influence on the game, especially through the yellow-red card and that is never good.”
From Stuttgart’s point of view, the game started well. Bremen was initially better in the game, but Stuttgart took the lead in the 19th minute after Angelo Stiller was presented by Leonidas Stergiou, by the way the first goal of the 23-year-old Swiss. After the lead goal, VfB had more of the game, but could not expand the lead.
Yellow-red for Woltemade “decisive game”
“What we have to be accused of is precision and clarity,” said Hoeneß after the game. Little came out for the fact that his team was so often in the last third. With the equalization in the 32nd minute by Bremen’s Oliver Burke, the game was open again. For the eighth time, the Swabians played a tour, as often as no other Bundesliga team this season.
Shortly after the break, Stuttgart’s Woltemade heavily used the elbow against Bremen’s Niklas and saw yellow for it. This decision then had a bit of a consequence for VfB in the 65th minute: after a new foul rating by referee Schlager Schlager Flew Woltemade flew off the square with yellow-red. He had touched Mitchell Weiser with the tip of the foot on the ankle.
Hoeneß found clear words for deciding: “I don’t do that otherwise. I think I can actually say that. But today it was just decisive.
Late defeat as a neck strike
Hoeneß did not agree with several decisions by the referee: “We got a counterattack in the first half and get a yellow card himself, in which he simply incorrectly assessed the situation.” In the 90th minute, the Bremeners then made profit from the majority and – again through Burke – achieved the winning gate.
For Stuttgart, the goal marked the fifth Bundesliga home defeat in a row: “But that in the end we will leave the pitch as a loser is bitter and, in my view,” said Hoeneß. VfB is now in the eleventh place with 40 points and has five points behind the SC Freiburg in sixth place. On Holy Saturday (April 19, 2025), the Swabians are guests at Union Berlin.
