The AZ midfielder is undergoing a stormy development. Smit is in the selection of the Dutch national team for the first time and is now in his first minutes. He forms the midfield together with former AZ players Teun Koopmeiners and Tijjani Reijnders.
Smit previously said that he was very much looking forward to his first period with the Dutch team. Last Monday he reported to the selection for the first time and indicated that he was still a bit nervous. “I want to show that I might be able to compete at the level. I am very curious about that,” he told NH Sport.

Smit is the 41st player to play for the Dutch national team on behalf of AZ. The last AZ player to play for the Dutch team was Bruno Martins Indi in 2022. The first Dutch international of AZ was Kees Kist in 1975.
The Netherlands – Norway match starts at 8:45 PM in the Johan Cruijff Arena. Next Tuesday, the Dutch team will play against Ecuador.
