For the “Three Lionesses”, after the failed opening game, it was all about everything at this European Championship. The title candidate is impressively back against “Oranje”. A player overrides.
England has returned to the football European Championships of Women in Switzerland with a Tor gala. The team of star trainer Sarina Wiegman clearly won her second group game on Wednesday evening with 4-0 (2-0) against the Netherlands. After the unexpected 1-2 defeat at the start of the tournament against France, the “Three Lionesses” was about not to leave prematurely. And the team showed a strong reaction.
Lauren James (22nd, 60th), Georgia Stanway (45.+2) and Ella Toone (67th) met in the Valigrund Stadium of Zurich in front of the eyes of Prince William for the never really endangered victory against disappointing Dutch women.
Due to the 1-2 opening defeat against France, the Lionesses were under great pressure. And the fans saw that. At first attempts to attack looked nervous and hasty, chances arose by chance. In a game that stayed behind the expectations, James from 16 meters then took the lead.
England’s Dutch trainer Sarina Wiegman, European champion in 2017 with her home country, was allowed to cheer again shortly before the break – again after a great individual performance. This time Stanway Stanway drogs into the mesh with a drop kick from around 20 meters.
After the break, James used a rebound to 3: 0, Toone provided the fourth goal to the delight of the English fans. “Toooone!” Canced the well -humored trailer. Meanwhile, the lionesses in orange came to dental and disgusted, and only the three eager trumpeters in the full Oranje block provided music.
Before the game, the eyes were particularly aimed at Oranje captain Vivianne Miedema (Manchester City) and Beth Mead (FC Arsenal), who are privately a couple, but did not face each other on the lawn.
Miedema did not find the game at all like storm colleague Jill Roord, who was replaced by Wolfsburg’s Lineth Beerensteyn after the break. After 66 minutes, Jonker also took the 28-year-old off the pitch. Only then did Mead enter the lawn for a short assignment.
